The Flies
1987 BCB (before Cactus Blanket)
The Flies were an early musical project, formed in 1987 with longtime friends Rodger McKinley and Jim Davis. The band was short‑lived, but we managed to pack in a few memorable moments during our brief existence.
We recorded a handful of cassette demos that found their way onto CKDU Radio, and we played a string of shows across Halifax’s indie and campus‑music circuit. Some of the highlights included:
Club Flamingo (Gottingen Street) - where we opened for Montreal's Gruesomes and the Jellyfishbabies.
Club Flamingo’s Barrington‑area location - sharing the bill with Kearney Lake Road, who would later evolve into Sloan.
CKDU/TUNS Lawn Jam - where we performed alongside a young Sarah McLachlan, just before her rise to international fame.
Mount Saint Vincent University
University of King’s College
Dalhousie’s Phi Delta Theta
And, of course, Pissing off the Neighbours who lived in the flat directly beneath my bedroom - the same bedroom where we recorded our demo, “It’s The Flies.”
This page is still a work in progress.
